Wood can provide a very warm look to a kitchen when used as a countertop, but it requires more care than you may be willing to give.
The best use for wood in a kitchen is for a butcher block. This is because wood easily shows knife marks and other damage, so for many families it will not be the right choice for the countertops overall. As a butcher block, however, it excells. It doesn't damage your knives. Damage can be removed by sanding.
Of course, wood countertops are easily damaged by heat or moisture. Such damage is not as easily removed as damage caused by knives.
Wood can be maintained by basic cleaning and occasional application of mineral oil or other finishing materials to protect the wood.
Wood countertops are best placed where you plan on doing most of your cutting and chopping for food preparation.
