Concrete Countertops

Concrete may sound dull at first, but there's more to concrete than the dull grey of sidewalks.

When used in countertops, concrete is easily molded to suit your needs, and can have a wide range of colors and textures. It is one of the most easily customized materials used to make countertops. You can include pretty much any details you like, from edging to integrated sinks to drain boards.

You can seal concrete or not, but unsealed concrete will change in appearance with age, which you may or may not appreciate. It is heat resistant and does not scratch easily. If you seal your concrete countertop, you will need to wax it every few months as well to maintain the appearance.

You do not want to cut directly on your concrete countertop - it may show, despite concrete's overall durability. It's also bad for your knife.

Perhaps one of the most interesting things you can do with concrete is add tiles or other objects to the concrete, creating your own unique look.

Although it is relatively easy to get concrete cast to your specifications, concrete tiles may be available as well if you need to get your project done more quickly or have a more limited budget.

Of course, concrete is very heavy, so you need sturdy cabinets beneath your countertops if you choose this solution. Not all contractors are familiar with concrete countertops, which may be another disadvantage.
